I have just completed my B.A. Hons. Degree in Arts/Design Craft from the University of Essex at the Colchester School of Arts and Design. I seized the opportunity to study Arts and Design because of my appreciation of Art which began during my upbringing. My career in the Diplomatic Service, Corporate background and motherhood role have prevented me from doing so until now.
My philosophy is one that believes in the creative process and experimenting with materials especially glass and raku. My creative process, one could say, is experience led. I am continually evolving in response to practical research outcomes. Initially, I respond to qualities inherent in the material itself. With glass, I try to capture the fluidity and translucency of the material. I love the simplicity of the raku method as it feels more personal. It ignites my imagination because of my oriental roots. Raku reminds me of an elemental subject, it feels earthy and the practice is made up of wind, water and fire which are the elements of raku in Japanese lore.
My work combines two experiences: one of intuitive action responding to the material and the other a critical reflection that follows on from the finished pieces when I review my results. To achieve my forms, I continually move backwards and forwards between these two 'experiences' refining the work intuitively and intellectually.
